What is temple jewellery? A simple guide
Temple jewellery is one of South India's oldest and most beloved ornament traditions. If you're new to it — or choosing a piece for a wedding or dance recital — here's everything worth knowing, in plain terms.
What is temple jewellery?
Temple jewellery is a traditional South Indian style of ornament that was originally made to adorn temple deities and, later, Bharatanatyam and other classical dancers. It is defined by its antique gold-toned finish, divine and nature motifs, and bold red-and-green kemp stones.
Today the same designs are worn by brides, dancers and families for weddings, temple functions and festive occasions — a way to carry a centuries-old craft into modern celebrations.
Where did it come from?
The craft traces back to the temples of Tamil Nadu and the surrounding South Indian regions, where ornaments were created to decorate idols during festivals. Over time, devadasis and Bharatanatyam dancers began wearing these pieces on stage, and the style became inseparable from classical dance.
What makes a piece "temple" jewellery?
- Motifs of gods and goddesses (Lakshmi, Nataraja), lotuses, peacocks and mangoes.
- An antique, matte gold-toned finish rather than bright, shiny plating.
- Kemp stones — the characteristic deep red and green stones — often with pearls.
- Substantial, sculptural designs meant to be seen from a stage or across a hall.
What's it made of?
Fine temple jewellery can be made in gold, but most everyday and dance pieces are handcrafted in brass or temple steel with an antique finish — the authentic temple look without the cost of precious metal. At Vijaya Temple Jewellery our pieces are made this way, with honest weights and durable finishes.
