Temple jewellery vs one-gram gold: which should you choose?
"Temple jewellery", "one-gram gold" and "brass" are often used loosely — and it can be confusing when you're buying. Here's what each actually means and how to choose.
They describe different things
"Temple jewellery" is a style — the South Indian temple look of antique finishes, divine motifs and kemp stones. "One-gram gold" and "brass" describe what a piece is made of. So a piece can be temple-style and made in brass, or temple-style and one-gram gold.
One-gram gold
One-gram gold (also called micro gold plating) is a base metal coated with a thin layer of real gold. It looks like gold and is affordable, but the thin plating can wear with heavy use and moisture over time.
Brass and temple steel
Brass and temple steel pieces carry an antique gold-toned finish built for the temple look. They're hard-wearing and well suited to the repeated wear, travel and stage use that dance jewellery goes through — which is why we handcraft our pieces this way, with honest weights.
Which should you choose?
- For Bharatanatyam, arangetram and repeated stage wear: a durable antique-finish piece that handles travel and handling.
- For a bright, gold-like look at a lower price point: one-gram gold.
- For weddings and festive wear: pick the finish and weight you love — the style matters more than the label.
