How to care for brass temple jewellery so it lasts
Brass and antique-finish temple jewellery can look beautiful for years with a little care. The finish dulls fastest from moisture and chemicals — avoid those, store it right, and your pieces will stay rich and photo-ready.
Keep it away from moisture and chemicals
Water, sweat, perfume, deodorant and hairspray are what dull an antique or gold-polish finish fastest. Put your jewellery on last, after makeup and perfume, and take it off before washing or sleeping.
Wipe it after every wear
After wearing, wipe each piece gently with a soft, dry cotton cloth to remove oils and sweat before you put it away. Don't use water, toothpaste or metal polish on antique finishes — they strip the look that makes temple jewellery special.
Store each piece separately and dry
- Keep pieces in airtight pouches or a lined box so air and humidity can't reach them.
- A small sachet of silica gel in the box helps in humid, coastal weather.
- Store pieces separately so stones and edges don't scratch each other.
What's normal, and what's not
Antique, oxidised and gold-polish finishes naturally mellow and change tone over time and with wear — this is part of the craft, not a defect. Small differences in handwork between pieces are normal for handmade jewellery too.
